Aston Martin - History
Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, forming Bamford & Martin the previous year to sell and service cars made by Singer and some other since forgotten manufacturers from their London premises. Lionel Martin began racing specially designed cars at Aston Hill, so the pair decided to make their own vehicles. The first "Aston Martin" car was created by fitting a 4-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a Isotta-Fraschini. As the cars started to capture peoples imagine they acquired premises in Kensington and produced their first true Aston Martin in March 1915. Unfortunately World War One stopped production with both men joining the Army and Navy; with all the machinery being sold.
Bamford left in 1920, so it was not until 1922 with some fortuitous funding that they entered a car in the French Grand Prix. The rest has they say is history, but suffice to say the various owners maintained the prestige throughout the years and now Aston Martin is an international luxury brand.
