AUDI AG, is more commonly known as Audi. Audi's headquarters are in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. Audi has been an almost wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group since 1964.
Audi - History
The company origins date back to 1899 and August Horch. The first Horch vehicle was produced in 1901, but Horch was forced out of the company. Horch then started a new company but continued using the Horch brand (seems logical - it is his name after all). However, his former company partners sued him for trademark infringement and bizarrely the German court decided in their favour.
So Horch needed a new name of his company, thanks to the young son of his friend they opted for the Latin version of his name. Horch means "Hark" or "listen" in German; so Audi as in Audible, was born.
Audi started with a 2.6 litre 4-cylinder model, followed by a 3.6L, 4.7L and 5.7L models. These cars were even successful at sporting events. August Horch left the Audi company in 1920, but the company continueed on until 1928 when the company was acquired by Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of DKW. In the same year, Rasmussen also bought the remains of the US vehicle manufacturer, Rickenbacker whose engines. These engines were used in Audi Zwickau and Audi Dresden models which were launched in 1929. Even back at the beginning Audi cars of that era were luxurious cars equipped with special bodywork.
