BMW - The Company
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) translated into English as "Bavarian Motor Works"; is an independent German vehicle manufacturer founded in 1916. I am sure every one knows, BMW is a global company specialising in high-performance and luxury cars, vans and motorcycles.
BMW also owns the iconic and quintessentially English brands MINI and Rolls-Royce; if only the English were more like Germans.
BMW - History
BFW was founded in 1916, the new company included Otto Werke. BMW acquired the BFW site in 1922, but BMW regards the BFW establishment as its true founding date. After the end of WW1 the company began working on rail vehicles (brakes and engines) following the production ban on aircraft engines. There was a fair amount of actvitiy during the years before and during WW2 thanks to Nazi state funding, but the company essentially had to start from scratch after the war.
Mid 1945 BMW began to manufacture spare parts and agricultural equipment, whilst also being authorised for motorcycle production. The first motorcycle designs were ready by 1947, but the majority of stock was exported meaning the company struggled until 1959 when Diamler-Benz made a offer to take over the company. They opted for a Herbert Quandt who increased his family Shareholdings. After the next 20 years the company flourished and open a number of plants notably Dingolfing the largest BMW plant in the world.
The rest is history, BMW went on to become as successful as the Daimler Benz company and secured its place in the minds of drivers the world over. Never quite as sexy as Audi, or as prestigious as Mercedes - BMW sits happily in the middle taking the substantial middle ground.
