Chevrolet - The Company
Chevrolet also commonly known as Chevy; is a world famous brand of motor vehicle like most American cars produced by General Motors (GM). Being a UK site, we were surprised to learn that it is actually the top selling GM marque brand, and is considered the best known brand owned by GM, so much so in the US "Chevrolet" or "Chevy" are synonymous with GM.
There are 20 Chevrolet vehicles each with a variety of enhancements for its home market. Chevy's range from subcompact cars to medium duty commercial trucks, the type we see throughout modern film and entertainment. The biggest seller in the US market are the Silverado pickup, which is only 2nd behind the Ford F-Series and then the Chevrolet Impala. Unfortunately both of these models are not available in the UK currently; but that is probably due to the European marketplace and it's design preferences.
Chevrolet - History
Louis Chevrolet & William C. Durant co-founded Chevrolet, when Louis Chevrolet (a race-car driver) and William Durant, the founder of General Motors were forced out of GM in 1910. Durant wanted to use Louis Chevrolet's designs to re-build his reputation as a force in the automotive industry. Bearing in mind he was the head of the Buick Motor Company, before founding GM, you have to say Durant had already cemented his place in history - but being forced out of your own company must spur you on, especially if you are as entrepreneurial as Durant.
The Chevrolet logo is actually called the "bowtie" which was created in 1913, although it does look like a Cross, which is why many people believe it's a creative spin on the Swiss flag in homage to Louis birthplace Switzerland.
Durant visited Toronto in 1915, considering a production facilities in Canada. After a meeting with "Colonel Sam" McLaughlin, of the McLaughlin Motor Car Company, they agreed the Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada, would be operated by McLaughlin and produce Chevrolet cars in Canada. Three years later, the 2 Canadian operations were purchased by GM to become General Motors of Canada Ltd.
Almost immediately Chevrolet became so profitable, they in 1916 Durant buy majority stack back in GM. A deal was completed in 1917, which meant Durant became president of General Motors, with the Chevrolet brand merging with GM, as a separate division. Again you have to respect a man who was forced out, but within 6 years earned enough money to buy the company.
In 1918 Chevrolet produced the Model D, a V8 4-passenger roadster along with a 5-passenger tourer model. Over the years there have been a number of famous models, the most notable being the luxurious Impala (introduced in 1958), the rear-engined Corvair and the iconic Chevrolet Corvette. To give you some context on how big an influence Chevrolet has been for the motor industry - By 1963, 1 in 10 cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet.
