Daihatsu - The Company
Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (Daihatsu Kogyo Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese manufacturer of automobiles, specifically well known for smaller models and off-road vehicles. The majority of the models are known as kei jidosha (or kei cars) in Japan.
Daihatsu the name is derived from combining of the kanji for Osaka and the first word of the phrase "engine manufacture" (hatsudoki seizo); if you put them together they are pronounced "dai hatsu"
Daihatsu was founded in 1951 as new organisation from the original Hatsudoki. Daihatsu began exporting to Europe by the 1960s, although the 1980s were the years where the brand really took off in Europe.
Daihatsu - History
The Hatsudoki Seizo Co., Ltd was founded in 1907, but as previously mentioned Hatsudoki was renamed in 1951 forming the Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. In 1967, Daihatsu signed an business agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation. In 1988 Daihatsu USA launched the Charade and Rocky models, but 4 years later the USA division shut down with Toyota being more well known for Daihatsu models to the US. In the 1999 the Toyota agreement turned into a controlling interest, with Toyota taking a controlling 51% of the Daihatsu Motor Ltd.
