Ferrari - The Company
Ferrari S.p.A. is the probably the worlds most well known sports car manufacturer, based in Maranello, Italy. Enzo Ferrari founded the company in 1929 calling it Scuderia Ferrari, originally Ferrari sponsored drivers and manufactured racing cars before finally moving into production of consumer vehicles in 1947 as Ferrari S.p.A. Ferrari unlike other sports car makers as also continued to participate in pure racing, notably Formula One, where it continues to enjoy great success.
Due to nature of the high performance sector, Ferrari always struggled financially, so it was no surprise when Enzo Ferrari sold the sports car division to Fiat in 1969. Enzo's great passion was always racing so the Ferrari family always maintained control of the racing division until his death in 1988. Before he died, probably to cement his legacy, Enzo oversaw the launch of the Ferrari F40; one of the most famous supercars ever made.
Today Ferrari probably make more money from the international merchandising of the brand, with eyewear, electronic goods, perfume, clothing, high-tech bicycles and even laptop computers. One of the few car brand to transcend the road, Ferrari is truly an international brand of speed, elegance and performance.
Ferrari - History
Enzo Ferrari's intention was never to produce road cars when he formed Scuderia Ferrari ("Ferrari Stable" a term used to mean "Team Ferrari") in 1929, literally he was sponsoring amateur drivers based out of Modena. Until 1938 Enzo Ferrari was preparing various drivers for Alfa Romeo cars, so they officially hired him to head the racing department at Alfa.
Due to Alfa Romeo's size it was essentially taken over by the government during WW2 to help Benito Mussolini's war effort. Luckily for Ferrari and in fact humans generally, the Ferrari division was small enough and unrelated to the war effort to not be affected. Based on the demerger of sorts, Enzo was prohibited from racing for 4 years, Scuderia Ferrari became Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari (also known as SEFAC - Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Auto Corse), which basically produced machine tools and aircraft accessories.
Ferrari did produce one race car, the Tipo 815 during the non-competitive period; so becoming the first Ferrari car (debuting at 1940 Mille Miglia). The Ferrari factory moved to its current home Maranello in 1943. The production of road cars was always seen as funding for Enzo's first love, racing.
The very first Ferrari road car was the 125S launched in 1947, the 125S was powered by a 1.5L V12 engine; which Enzo reluctantly built and sold to fund Scuderia Ferrari. Ever beautiful and fast the cars gained a reputation for excellence, although Enzo thought most of his customers were buying Ferrari's for the prestige and not the performance.
The black prancing stallion on a yellow shield is one of most famous symbols in the world, with racing cars the badge also has an SF (for Scuderia Ferrari), with 3 stripes of green, white and red (Italian Flag) at the top. Ferrari road cars have a rectangular badge on the hood and the race logo on the side.
In 1923, Enzo Ferrari met Countess Paolina, the mother of Count Francesco Baracca, an Italian air force hero from World War I. The Count painted a horse on the side of his planes, so the Countess asked Enzo to use the horse on his cars for good luck. The horse was black in homage to Baracca's heroic death, with the canary yellow color of the city of Modena, his birthplace.
Since the 1920s, Italian race cars (Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari) were often painted in "race red" (Rosso Corsa). This was the national racing color of Italy, in the same way French cars like Bugatti were mostly blue, German cars were white and British cars green.
