Car production reaches high

British production of cars is at its highest for more than ten years, according to the latest figures.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows more than one million cars have been produced in Britain since the start of 2016.

The last time this was achieved was in 2004 and shows the growing strength of the country’s motor industry.

In July the number of cars built totalled 125,566 – making the overall number produced for the year so far 1,023,723.

July also saw a 14 per cent rise in domestic demand for new vehicles, with export levels also strong with almost four out of every five cars finding their home overseas.

SMMT’s chief executive, Mike Hawes, said: “Future success will depend on continued new car demand and attracting the next wave of investment so Britain must demonstrate it remains competitive and open for business.”
