Choosing the right car for you

When it comes to buying a car it can be very confusing as it seems like there is almost limitless options.

However, read our guide on how to make the right decision and ensure you leave the showroom with a vehicle that suits all of your needs.

Firstly, how much can you afford to spend? Setting a budget will help narrow down your choice. While, we would all love a top of the range supercar, but it is more likely you will need to make some compromises.

Remember that it isn’t just the initial cost of the vehicle, but ongoing upkeep, fuel costs, tax and insurance cover will also need to be considered when setting your car budget.

Also consider whether you are planning to sell the car on in a few years – how much can you realistically expect to get back. If you do plan to change vehicles in a short time, then look at models that retain their value.

If you are considered about your weekly fuel bill, then there are a number of models that offer good fuel economy.
The VW Golf Bluemotion has been designed specifically to deliver good fuel economy, or you may want to do further research into hybrids as they can also help lower the amount spent at the pump.

However, it may be the case that fuel efficient cars have a higher purchase price so you may only recoup the initial outlay if you intend to do enough miles.

It is also worth remembering that road tax is no longer a blanket fee. There are a total of 13 different tax bands and are based on how the level of carbon emissions a vehicle emits – generally speaking the larger the engine the higher the excise duty.

How do you plan to use your car?

What is the point of your new car – will you be travelling for long periods of time or is it for shorter journeys. If the former, then look at vehicles that offer good comfort as you don’t want to be spending hours in a car that does not have air conditioning or supportive seats.

While additional extras such as alloy wheels and body kits may look attractive, it could mean more upkeep and prove to be an unnecessary expense if you just plan to get from A to B as quickly as possible.

What size of car do you need?

Do you need to carry passengers? If you are planning to do the school run then you need to make sure you can comfortably fit the children, potential playdates, bags and sport kits in – so boot space may be a priority. This could mean looking at MPVs, which offer a number of configurable seats and generous extra space.

However, if you plan to travel alone and only occasional carry passengers then opting for a supermini, such as the Ford Fiesta, may make more sense.

You will also need to consider any additional demands you may put on your car. If you own a caravan or a trailer then remember you need to make sure any potential vehicle will be capable of towing such items.

Also if you have a garage and want to park your new purchase in it then make sure it will fit!

Research done ahead of that trip to the showroom will help make sure you come away with a car that suits you needs and budget.
