Concerns raised over UK drug driving

GEM Motoring Assist has raised concerns about the increase in the number of motorists taking to the road while under the influence of drugs.

Recent figures reveal that around six in ten drivers subjected to roadside tests have shown positive for being over the legal drug drive limit.

Cheshire Police have also reported an 800 per cent increase in arrests made since the introduction of the new roadside detection kits in 2015.

Chief executive of the road safety and breakdown organisation David Williams said: "Driving under the influence of drugs is extremely dangerous and entirely inappropriate. GEM calls for greater consistency in sentencing, particularly, because it is vital to send a strong safety message to those who consider it acceptable to drive after taking drugs."

Convictions for drug driving now stay on the licence for 11 years and those found guilty face a minimum one-year disqualification and up to £5,000 fine.
