Details of Mazda MX-5 revealed

The fourth generation of the MX-5 is set to appeal to fans of the popular model.

First launched 25 years ago, the car has been completely revamped and will be available in 1.5 litre and 2.0 litre options.

The new car was revealed at the New York Motor Show and the key improvement is the weight following the introduction of aluminium wings to bring it to around 1,000 KG.

It is expected prices will start at £18,495 for the basic entry model and there are numerous upgrades available for those buyers willing to spend more.

The UK debut of the Mazda MX-5 will be at the forthcoming 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed and fans are likely to be tempted by the various improvements.

All of the new models will feature six-speed manual gearboxes, air-conditioning, LED headlights and alloy wheels. Additional options include cruise control, daytime lights and an in-car entertainment system.

The top of the range will also have automatic lights, heated seats and a high-tech sound system.

Buyers will be able to pick form seven different colours and the cars will go on sale this summer.

Mazda chief Masamichi Kogai explained the aim of the designers of the new model was to recapture the fun of the original MX-5.

"The original concept behind the MX-5 was so simple; to offer the pure joy of a lightweight sports car that moves precisely as the driver intends," said Mr Kogai.
