European car registrations on the up

There has been a strong rise in the number of cars being registered across Europe’s biggest markets.

Data from JATO Dynamics saw a 9.3 per cent increase in registrations during August, following a two per cent decline in the previous month.

In total, registrations for August totaled 562,046 – up from 514,428 in August 2015.

Italy reported the largest increase with a 20.2 per cent rise in registrations, while UK also saw a positive growth of 3.3 per cent increase.

VW remains Europe’s largest car maker with a 5.8 per cent increase, however, its total market share fell from 26.3 per cent in August 2015 to 25.5 per cent in 2016.

“As the market continues to shift and Volkswagen brands continues to slowdown, other brands continue to improve in the mainstream market, such as Dacia, Fiat and Hyundai-Kia which have all seen strong growth, whilst in the premium market, Mercedes is continuing to perform well,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Automotive Analyst at JATO Dynamics.
