Ford’s new SYNC 2 can take you to dinner

The new Ford SYNC 2 has an ultra-intelligent in-car system that is able to react to natural voice commands.

If you are at a loss as to where to eat tonight, the new Ford SYNC 2 may be able to give you a helping hand. Its voice-activated system is able to find a restaurant, help book a table and offer directions to the location.

According to the carmaker, the new model is equipped with “advanced connectivity” that allows the driver to control in-car systems with natural voice commands and through a high-resolution eight-inch touch screen.

The features that come with the new SYNC 2 offer ease of use to the owner, enabling he or she to easily control the entertainment system, climate control, satnav and linked devices, such as mobile phones and MP3 players.

If the driver pushes the voice control button and says “I’m hungry”, the system will produce a list of local restaurants to satisfy the craving. The owner can also use the MICHELIN guide to choose a place to eat and the SYNC 2 will automatically call the establishment to book a table, as well as guide the driver to the location.

Christof Kellerwessel, chief engineer, Electronic and Electrical Systems Engineering, Ford of Europe, commented: “We have developed SYNC 2 so it is simple and intuitive for drivers to use, and it seamlessly switches between touch screen and voice commands.

“Drivers will be able to control more in-car systems than ever before, while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.”

To enter an address into the satnav, the driver does not need to type it or say it in stages, as the in car-system is able to process the information in one chunk. In addition, the owner only needs to name an attraction for the SYNC 2 to provide directions, rather than providing the full address.

If it gets too hot, the driver just has to say “Max AC” and the car will supply a blast of cool air. The system can even be given more specific instructions, such as an accurate temperature. Once an MP3 player is plugged in, the car can be told to play a particular artist or track, and the driver need only say a name to call a contact when using the hands-free.

The SYNC 2 will be introduced alongside the new Mondeo later this year.
