How to test drive a car

Before deciding on a new car it is crucial to have a test drive to make sure the model is the right one for you.

Many dealers will allow you to have a test car for an extended time or overnight so you can spend some time making a decision.

If you do opt for a test drive then make sure you have the right insurance cover in place in case you are involved in an accident.

Reputable drivers will have special cover in place that will protect potential buyers, but it is likely you will not be covered if you have arranged to test drive a car that is being sold privately. If that is the case, then check your own car insurance for the terms of 'drive another car with the owner's permission'.

So what to look for when test driving a vehicle?

Don't feel rushed when taking a test drive – you are entitled to make sure you are buying the right vehicle and it can be stressful when driving an unfamiliar model.

To help you assess if the car is right for your lifestyle make sure you put it through its paces.

Try it on lots of different kinds of roads, a car can handle differently and it may be suited to short city driving, which may not be ideal if you usually drive for long periods on motorways.

Is the seat comfortable and able to adjust to your height and driving position? You'll also need to make sure you can get in and out easily – no point buying if it is going to aggravate your long-term back condition.

If you are looking for a vehicle to drive the family around, you might want to check that your child car seats fit correctly, otherwise it could be expensive to buy new ones that are suitable.

Do some manoeuvres in the car? Does it offer good visibility or are there any blind spots that you are not happy with.

Check out the boot space? Does it look large enough for your needs – will it take the weekly shopping or your sporting equipment? Look to see if the rear seats can be folded down or removed if you need to put large items in the car.

Don't be forced to make a decision there and then. If you fall in love with the car then great, but even after a test drive if you still have doubts, then do not be afraid to look at other vehicles or ask for another test drive.
