IAM offers tips for driving in storms

The IAM has urged drivers to be cautious on the roads in stormy conditions.

With the UK recently being hit by a number of storms, including storm Imogen, which caused power outages and transport disruption in south-west England and Wales, drivers have been offered some advice on driving safely in difficult weather conditions.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said that, when the weather is "extremely bad", the best approach is to avoid taking journeys altogether.

When you do have to drive in strong winds, be sure to grip the steering wheel firmly to ensure you stay in control of the vehicle and show extra care around vulnerable road users, such as motorcyclists.

Be aware that gusts might be particularly strong when you are passing through gaps between buildings and overtaking larger vehicles.

The IAM also advised drivers to look out for debris on the road and allow enough space to move around it if necessary, something that can be made easier by driving at a steady speed.

Mark Lewis, director of standards at the road safety charity, said: "Stormy weather can be extremely unpredictable – be prepared for the worst. And as always, avoid the journey where possible."
