Motorists reminded about holiday checks

It is estimated that 15 million holidaymakers are planning to take their vehicle on their vacation this year.

Research by Kwik Fit estimated they will drive a collective 15.2 billion miles and around one in four motorists will opt to holiday in the south west of the UK.

However, many drivers will fail to make basic but vital checks before setting off on their trip.

Four in ten admit they don’t check their tyre pressures and six in ten revealed don’t assess their tread depth. Just 53 per cent planned to check their oil and only 33 per cent would look at brake fluid levels.

Overall, less than one in five would opt to have their car serviced before leaving home, even if they were about to go on a long journey.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, said: "When we are all pushed for time and checking that we have packed the right things for our holidays, it can be understandable that our cars get neglected.

"However, a breakdown on holiday is one sure way to ruin the experience for all the family, so we encourage drivers to carry out some simple checks before setting off on what is likely to be their car’s longest and hottest journey of the year."
