New Ford Focus RS planned

Ford has confirmed a new Ford Focus RS will be released in the near future.

The last version was released in 2009 and the updated model is likely to be made available to buyers in 2016.

A prototype version was seen back in the summer in Germany, but the latest news that it will go in to production is likely to please fans of the popular RS.

However, Raj Nair, Ford’s global product development vice president, could not confirm launch dates or prices.

Mr Nair added: "To earn the RS badge, the vehicle has to be a no-compromise driver's car that can deliver exceptional performance on the track when required while providing excellent every day driving.

"From our most nimble Fiesta to our hard-working full-size pickups and racing vehicles, our line-up benefits from the innovations we deliver at the track and at the limit."

The updated model will likely feature the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine from the 2015 Mustang and could offer around 304 bhp, although Ford may need to push this further to compete with other high performance hatch backs such as the Mercedes A45 AMG and Audi RS3.

Ford is planning to produce 12 new performance vehicles by 2020 via an international Ford Performance team. The company will also aim to increase the efficiency of its parts and car delivery services.
