Nissan Qashqai tops UK production list

In 2014, the Nissan Qashqai was the country's most manufactured car, according to new industry figures.

The data from the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals the Nissan was only sixth in terms of sales, but more Qashqais were built in Britain than another model.

In total, Nissan built 285,110 Qashqais at its plant in Sunderland over the 12 month period – significantly ahead of the Mini Hatch at 178,993 units.

In third place was the Toyota Auris with 140,068, followed by Nissan's Juke and then the Range Rover Evoque, which is produced in Halewood.

Last month, the best-selling car in Britain was the Ford Fiesta followed by the Ford Focus and then VW Golf.

SMMT figures reveal the car industry is enjoying a strong period, with the 38th consecutive month of growth in sales. This means the sector is on course to be close to record sale levels for a 12-month period, with the SMMT estimating around 2.5 million units could be sold in 2015.

However, SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes did raise some caution about the long-term future of the industry.

"We are confident that the UK's new car market – so symbolic of economic mood – will continue to thrive, but long-term success will depend largely on economic and political stability in the months and years ahead."
