Right-hand drive Ford Mustang tests underway

Ford has announced plans to test a right-hand drive version of its iconic Mustang.

It’s the news everyone with a penchant for quintessential American cars has been waiting for – Ford has revealed that it’s testing a right-hand drive version of its iconic Mustang.

Up until now, the car has only been available with a left-hand drive to cater for the needs of drivers in countries where motorists must drive on the right-hand side of the road, including the US, many African countries and much of Europe.

However, the addition of a right-hand drive edition will mean drivers in countries such as the UK, Australia and South Africa can now take to the roads in a Mustang without the confusion that comes from sitting on the ‘passenger’ side to drive.

Ford said that its engineers have just finished building a prototype of the new version that will be used for testing over the next few months, with a view to making the car available for sale soon.

“While Mustang has more than 100 fan clubs around the globe, and was recently voted Europe’s Most Wanted Classic Car by AutoScout24, bringing a right-hand-drive Mustang to market will allow more enthusiasts to experience the car than ever before,” Ford said in a statement.

Over 9.2 million Mustangs have been sold in the US since it first launched 50 years ago, compared with around 161,000 in other countries – 4,000 of which were snapped up in 2012 alone, suggesting that the car has become increasingly popular recently as it’s been made available in more countries.

Celebrations of the car’s 50th birthday have included a special Mustang parade at last month’s Silverstone Classic, with spectators getting to enjoy the sight of hundreds of models of the classic car from the last five decades in one place.

Now those same spectators will get the chance to own a Mustang and give themselves a present of their own!
