Road safety charity issues Pokémon warning

Drivers are being reminded to make sure they don’t put lives at risk when planning the new Pokemon GO mobile game.

IAM Roadsmart is urging people to make sure they don’t get carried away and get distracted from paying attention to the road.

The app allows users to find out various Pokemon characters in real life settings, but there are fears some players could be tempted to play while driving.

Samson Ruwangu, IAM RoadSmart digital content executive, said: "Kids and adults alike are going crazy for this game. But the risk is that some people are going to be playing it at the wrong time – and driving a car is the last place you should be looking for Pidgey, Rattata or the others.

"I nearly tripped over playing this game. Pokemon GO makes you concentrate on catching characters and it takes both hand and eye coordination."

In recent research conducted by IAM RoadSmart eight per cent of drivers admitted to using a video-calling application such as Skype while in charge of a vehicle.
