SEAT enters SUV market with Ateca

SEAT unveils the Ateca SUV ahead of its UK launch in September.

SEAT has made its first foray into the SUV market with the Ateca, which was unveiled in Barcelona.

The Spanish manufacturer said the car combined a distinctive design with "dynamic driving fun", the versatility required for the urban environment and "compelling utility".

Tech highlights include Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Traffic Jam Assist systems, as well as an electric tailgate, virtual pedal and wireless charger.

A suite of engines are available in the Ateca range, all turbocharged and ranging in power from 115 to 190 PS.

The diesel range starts with the 1.6 TDI 115 PS, while the entry-level petrol engine is the 1.0 TSI with 115 PS.

Distinctive design elements of the new model include large, high grille brims at the front end and triangular light signatures.

Luca de Meo, president of SEAT, said the Ateca boasts "stunning" design and dynamics and is the "perfect" vehicle for an urban lifestyle.

He added: "Our first SUV marks the start of a new era for SEAT. The Ateca is a clear development of the Leon DNA and will drive forward the success of the range. SEAT is a brand on the move."

The model will have its UK launch in September.
