UK motorists ‘happier with their cars than ever before’

More Britons are expressing a high level of satisfaction with their new car deals than ever before, according to a consumer poll conducted by Auto Express.

Findings from the latest Auto Express Driver Power car owner survey has revealed that satisfaction levels among UK car owners have increased significantly from when the poll first launched in 2002.

The average satisfaction rating of a car in the Driver Power Top 100 among the more than 50,000 respondents to the poll came to 88.36 per cent, a rise of seven percentage points compared to the results of 12 years ago.

Skoda's Yeti was rated as Britain's best car to own for the third year running with an overall score of 92.7 per cent, with the same manufacturer's Citigo and Superb coming in second and third with respective scores of 92.6 per cent and 91.6 per cent.

Compounding Skoda's impressive performance was the fact that the Yeti was voted easiest car to drive, with the Citigo rated as the most affordable to run.

Meanwhile, the best-performing British car featured in the survey was the MG6 – which is assembled in Longbridge in the West Midlands and received an overall satisfaction rating of 90.9 per cent.

UK residents' recent satisfaction with their new car purchases could help to explain why vehicle sales have surged across the country in the last few months. Indeed, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders earlier this month revealed that new car registrations soared to the highest level in ten years in Britain during March 2014, with 464,824 units shifted during the period.

Steve Fowler, editor-in-chief of Auto Express, said: "The UK car market is booming at the moment, with over two years of consecutive growth and new car registrations up three per cent, and it is no surprise given the Driver Power results. Britons are happier than ever with their cars, scoring their vehicles much more highly than in previous years."
