VW plans new SUV models

Volkswagen has confirmed plans to release a number of new SUVs over the coming years.

The car maker said it will produce two new 4x4s, as well as a number of Alltrack models aimed at those with a limited budget or who are in the market for a long-wheelbase option.

Volkswagen's board chairman, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser, told the New York Motor Show there are likely to be a variety of new models due to the growing demand for SUVs.

"The first priority is a mid-sized SUV, second the Tiguan, then the T-ROC – the Golf SUV," explained Dr Neusser.

He added that the plans will take a number of years to implement, in order to not overwhelm consumers.

"We do it job by job. Otherwise it’s too complex to explain to the customer. You can’t do everything in parallel, you must be clear on what you are doing – and the clear plan was to cover each class with an SUV."

One option for Volkswagen, similar to Suzuki's current line-up, is to have two models in each segment, with one aimed at fashionable buyers and the other vehicle designed for practical-minded buyers.

Dr Neusser also refused to rule-out Volkswagen producing a budget SUV exclusively for the Chinese market.
