Which car upgrades are worth considering?

Purchasing a car can be a very confusing business and there are lots of choices for any buyer.

While you may spend a lot of time obsessing over what colour to purchase or what engine, it is a good idea to look at the other various upgrade options that are available.

The best interior upgrades

Which upgrades on offer will depend on what model you are opting for. If you go for a basic model then it may not have all the interior comforts you may desire.

If you do long journeys then it may be worth opting for the heated leather seats that are often fitted to the more high-end luxury models. However, in recent years there has been a trend for the more budget models to offer similar comfort – the feature can now be found on some Toyota and Peugeot models.

There has also been a growing trend towards offering in-car entertainment upgrades. While sat-nav systems used to be at the cutting edge, the growth of media entertainment systems means you can now have the choice of in-car DVD systems, digital radios, navigation systems that link with your phone and keep up to date with the latest travel news.

Rear cameras can also be fitted that link up with the console screen to help make parking in tight spots easier.

If you have children, consider a multimedia system that has multiple screens to keep those in the back happy on longer trips.

However, if you tend to just use your car to travel short distances and are happy to listen to Radio 2, then it probably isn't worth spending the extra on the latest in-car media gadgets.

Options like air-conditioning and electric windows are now standard on many cars, but it always worth checking if they are included in the base price. If not, it may be worth opting for a model that has these as standard – it may work out cheaper.

Exterior upgrades

If looking good is important then there are plenty of upgrades that aim to improve the look of a car.

Do some research into the visual benefit of alloys or bodykits if you really want your new vehicle to look the part. Often cars will have a range of limited edition paint finishes that could play a key role in the overall style of your new wheels.

However, there are some upgrades that can do more than just improve the general appearance of your new car. Mud flaps will help keep that paintwork shiny and cut down on cleaning time, while HID headlights last longer than standard lights and claim to produce a 'clearer' light that could make driving at night-time safer.

Finally, it is always ask the dealer if they could upgrade your fuel tank to a full one, so you can enjoy your first few miles without having to stop to fill up.
