Ford Mustang remains top sports car

The Ford Mustang remains the top selling sports car in the world for another year.

Sales data from IHS Markit shows that the majority of the sales of the model were in the US, although 45,000 Mustangs were sold in other regions during 2016.

Buyers in Germany and China are increasingly showing interest in the Mustang and the car is continuing to outperform other key sport models such as the Porsche 911 and Mazda MX-5.

The Ford Mustang has been on sale in the UK since the start of 2016 as part of the automaker’s strategy to increases its global appeal, with plans to launch in new markets such as Brazil and the Ivory Coast.

“The legacy of Mustang continues to grow, and in places it never reached before,” said Ford Mustang marketing manager Mark Schaller.

“We continue to make it available in new markets, and drivers in those markets continue to respond with resounding approval.”

Ford is also set to reveal a new model of the sports car over the next 12 months.
