Ford Mustang secures third year as world’s best-selling sports coupe

The Ford Mustang has been named the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the third year running, outselling the Porsche 911 in 13 countries.

Some 125,809 Mustangs were sold across 146 countries in 2017, with Britain accounting for 2,211 of these, while 13,100 found buyers in Europe.

Since the model's return to the European market in 2015, more than 418,000 Mustangs have been sold around the world, with Europeans buying 35,000 of them.

“The world is falling in love with the Mustang,” beamed Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle. “The Mustang represents the best of American design, performance and freedom, with an unmistakable personality that appeals – regardless of your postcode.”

Later this year, Ford will introduce a refreshed Mustang, boasting a more athletic exterior and an upscale interior with soft-touch materials and 12-inch digital instrument cluster.

One engine option will be Ford's 443bhp 5.0-litre V8, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, that can race from zero to 62mph in 4.3 seconds.
