Grandparents reminded about seat rules

Grandparents are often called on for childcare but many could be failing to protect the children in their car.

Research from insurance company LV= shows around 700,000 grandparents are driving their grandchildren around without following safety rules.

Three in five admitted they aren’t aware of any child seat laws and one in seven don’t use any child seats at all when ferrying young people around.

A recent change in the law requires drivers to ensure child who are under 12 years of age or smaller than 135cm have some form of car seat or booster.

The insurance company is hoping to raise awareness of the safety requirements and is calling on car companies, schools and parents to ensure everyone is following the law.

LV= managing director of car insurance, Selwyn Fernandes, said: “Every day, many grandparents provide invaluable help to their families by providing childcare. This will include countless car journeys and, in light of our new research we feel it’s important to raise awareness of the law and help families understand the importance of it.

“In doing so, we hope to clear up the confusion and ensure grandparents feel more confident that they are driving their grandchildren safely and legally.”
