Looking to be a cooler dad? Here are the must-have motors

Every dad would love to be seen as cool by their offspring, but it's a feat few achieve once the kids hit somewhere around the middle of primary school. All of a sudden, there's extensive eye-rolling in reaction to every single comment.

However, vehicle data specialist HPI reckons dads could win some instant 'school gate cred' – and all they have to do is invest in one of five cars.

Ahead of Father's Day this weekend, the company has put together a list of models it thinks are guaranteed to make daddy cool.

Top of the chart was the Jaguar E-Pace, nudging the Volvo XC40 into second position. Next came the Tesla Model X, followed by the Audi e-tron and the Audi TT to round off the all-important top five.

Consumer director at HPI Fernando Garcia said: "The Jaguar E-Pace just edged it in our poll ahead of the Volvo XC40. It's also perfect for the age range of a dad on the school run."

Since it's a crossover, this Jag does have more practicality than many of the vehicles that typically top this kind of list.

It also seems to meet the criteria of the Which? guide to buying a family car, which points out that the best models have wide-opening doors to allow you to get car seats in and out easily and a big boot for the pushchair.

The E-Pace also has plenty of room for people more than six feet tall, which is another of the magazine's recommendations to prevent you from getting a bad back.

However, with prices ranging from £28,815 to more than £48,000, we can't help but think mum would have something to say about dad splashing out on his own Father's Day gift just to win a bit of street cred.

After all, there are some great Nissan and Vauxhall deals around lately … we just can't guarantee they'll help stop the eye-rolling. Sorry.
