Mercedes-AMG A 35 revealed ahead of Paris debut, coming October

This is the first official glimpse of the new Mercedes-AMG A 35, due on sale this October following an official unveiling at the Paris Motor Show.

It uses Mercedes’ latest two-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, but it has been given the AMG treatment, tweaked and repurposed to produce 302bhp and up to 400Nm of torque.

All that power is shot through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to all four wheels and with launch control function enabled, the A 35 can blast to 62mph from rest in 4.7 seconds before topping out at a limited 155mph.

The engine comes backed with five self-explanatory driving modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.

These settings provide a wide range of vehicle characteristics from comfortable to dynamic and change relevant parameters, such as the response of the engine and transmission.

Visually, a raft of styling flourishes set the A 35 apart from other A-Classes, including a fixed rear wing, 18-inch alloy wheels, sports exhaust, slightly widened arches and new front and rear bumpers with large air inlets and black winglets.

Starting price is estimated to be around £36,000, which would make it the most affordable route into owning an AMG.

An even hotter AMG A 45 is due some time in 2019, but the A 35 is likely to trigger some second guessing from anyone thinking of ordering an Audi S3 and VW Golf R.

Tobias Moers, chief executive of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, views the A 35 as “a true AMG for the Hot Hatch stage”.

“With the new A 35, we are fulfilling our brand promise of driving performance in every detail and offering thrilling lateral dynamics at the level of today's A 45,” he said.
