Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ‘a global hit’

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been a "hit around the world", with the Japanese manufacturer attributing the model's global sales of 80,000 units to its fusion of SUV functionality and coupe styling.

Europe was the first region to see the Eclipse Cross in early 2018, followed by Japan and the United States.

And it's in Europe that the crossover has been the biggest hit, with more than 33,200 sales to date. North American drivers have bought more than 14,000, while Japanese sales figures have passed the 11,500 mark.

Customer surveys revealed that design is the biggest motivator for people to buy the Eclipse Cross, showing that Mitsubishi's first foray into the coupe SUV segment is winning people over with its looks.

The car's rough road performance and balanced driveability also helped it to win the RJC Car of the Year 2019 prize, which is given out by the Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference (RJC) of Japan.

Yuichiro Hayashi, chief product specialist at Mitsubishi, said: "The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers something truly different in the compact SUV sector.

"Coupe styling is combined with Mitsubishi's SUV functionality and driving experience to create a car which is stylish, rugged and good to drive. Its global success is proof that the concept is resonating with customers around the world."

To bolster its appeal to international drivers, the range will be getting a refresh this year, with additions including a lightning blue pearlescent paint option available for all models.

The Japanese automaker is also offering just 500 units of the Eclipse Cross Black Edition, as well as onboard Mitsubishi Connect telematics in the Black Connected Edition and machine-finished 16-inch alloy wheels for the Eclipse Cross 2.

Those driving the two-wheel-drive models in the range will be offered active yaw brake control, while auto-dimming rear view mirrors will be added to the Eclipse Cross 3 and 4.
