Nissan LEAF ‘achieves record sales in September’

Sales of the Nissan LEAF surpassed 850 in September, according to the SMMT.

Nissan has reported record sales of its 100 per cent electric LEAF car in September.

Figures from industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show a total of 851 sales were made last month, up by 156 per cent on the same point in 2013 and smashing the previous record of 630 set last March.

Not only was this a new benchmark for Nissan LEAF sales in the UK, but it also represents the highest number ever sold during a calendar month in any single European market.

With the best part of three full months still remaining in 2014, the volume of Nissan LEAFs sold (2,969) has already surpassed the total of 1,812 recorded for the whole of last year.

Praising the results, Nissan said motorists have been enticed by the LEAF's low running costs and practicality, as well as its "unique" driving experience, all of which are helping the electric vehicle remain ahead of the competition.

Looking further into the SMMT's statistics, it's particularly noticeable that September sales of the LEAF were more than double those of all other pure electric cars put together, with the Nissan model taking 70 per cent of the entire market.

It also shows that, with two-thirds market share, the LEAF is 2014's bestselling pure electric vehicle.

Paul O'Neill, electric vehicles manager at Nissan Motor GB, said sales of the car are going from strength to strength and claimed it is continuing to "blaze the trail" for other models in its class.

"September's result gives us a clear indication that motorists are beginning to recognise that switching to a Nissan LEAF is not a compromise but an opportunity," he added.

"With a performance that matches many of its traditionally powered competitors and the availability of charging infrastructure accelerating, the LEAF truly is a compelling choice and we fully expect to see sales continue to flourish."
