One million potholes reported in 2016

Last year more than one million potholes were reported in the UK, with many motorists experiencing damage to their vehicles.

A Freedom of Information request by insurance company Confused.com found a total of 1,031,787 potholes were recorded in 2016.

The highest numbers of potholes were recorded in Scotland with 154,310, followed by South West with 138,672.

Confused.com estimate the pothole problems have cost local councils more than £3 million in compensation, with Wiltshire having to pay out the most in damaged – £507,546.

Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, said: “Potholes are a bugbear among drivers, not least because of the damage they do to our vehicles – around £3.1 million worth of damage.

“If drivers experience a bump in the road, they should report it to their local council as soon as possible before the problem gets any worse. The cost of motoring alone is getting more and more expensive and damage repairs is a big contributor to this, as car parts increase in price as well.”

In 2016, councils were found to be spending a collective £104 million on repairing potholes – an average of £245 per pothole.
