Poll unveils Britain’s two favourite driving routes
A poll by Highways England has revealed Britain's two favourite routes for motorists when it comes to taking in scenery and chilling out behind the wheel.
Taking the top spot was the section of the M6 in Cumbria, thanks to its rolling hills and rugged landscape that incorporates Carlisle, Penrith, Shap Summit and the Lune Gorge.
Second on the list was the M1 in Leicestershire, which scored highly perhaps not due to its breathtaking natural scenery, but because motorists felt they could enjoy a smooth journey along its route. It's saying quite a lot when drivers are simply thankful for a lack of potholes and hold-ups.
Other favourite drives collected by Highways England included the M5 in the south-west and the A1 in Northumberland.
This means there have been some slight changes since 2014, when a survey by Shell found the A470 through Snowdonia National Park and the Brecon Beacons and the Snake Pass in the Peak District to be Britain's two favourite drives.
However, there was a point to Highways England's research, and that was to highlight the importance of road safety if you happen to be heading out on a pleasure trip this May Bank Holiday.
The organisation is calling on all motorists to ensure their vehicle is ready for any longer journey by taking a few simple precautions that could prevent breakdowns or even accidents.
It wants everyone to go back to basics and check their fuel, tyres and engine oil, as well as water levels so any obstructions can be quickly washed off the windscreen.
It has also recommended checking all lights – including hazards and reversing lights – are functioning properly, as any that are not could present a serious threat to drivers and other road users.
Finally, since some people could be hoping to make the most of the late spring warmth and taking their caravan away over the long weekend, checking the correct licence and insurance are in place was highlighted as a must.
Highways England's customer service director Melanie Clarke said: "Many people have a favourite road they love driving on – and we want everyone to reach their destinations safely."
