Nissan's zero-emission, 100 per cent electric vehicle, the Nissan<\/a> Leaf has been awarded 2011 European Car of the Year.<\/p>\n

The world's first mass-marketed, affordable, electric vehicle beat 40 contenders to become the first ever electric vehicle in the 47-year history of the awards to take the prestigious title.<\/p>\n

A jury of 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries judged the awards and decided that the Nissan Leaf was the best European Car.<\/p>\n

Hakan Matson, president of the jury, said: "The jury acknowledged today that the Nissan Leaf is a breakthrough for electric cars. Nissan Leaf is the first electric vehicle that can match conventional cars in many respects."<\/p>\n

Motorists looking for eco-friendly Nissan deals will have to wait until March 2011 for the Leaf to hit UK shores as it is currently produced in Japan.<\/p>\n

The Nissan Leaf is powered by a compact electric motor, producing an output of 109PS, which is enough for a maximum speed of 90mph.<\/p>\n

This accolade is not the first accolade that the Nissan Leaf has achieved after it was named as the Green Car of the Year by TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.<\/p>\n
