Rumoured government proposals to delay a car's first MoT test to its fourth year and then every other year afterwards will affect the safety of UK roads, the AA has said.<\/p>\n

Edmund King, the organisation's president, has written to the road safety minister, Mike Penning, to voice concerns over the proposals.<\/p>\n

A survey carried out by the AA shows that 94 per cent of its members believe the MOT test to be very (71 per cent) or quite (23 per cent) important to road safety in the UK.<\/p>\n

Some 62 per cent think there would be more hazardous vehicles on the road if they were MoT tested every other year rather than every year.<\/p>\n

Mr King said: "All too often you spot cars driving with a headlight, tail light or brake light out.<\/p>\n

"The only time many of these drivers do anything about it is when the car goes for an MOT test or if traffic police pull them over."<\/p>\n
