A particular focus is being placed on drivers as part of Road Safety Week.<\/p>\n

The initiative is being held between November 19th and 25th and will carry the theme Slower Speeds = Happy People.<\/p>\n

It is hoped the outcome of the scheme will see motorists limiting their speed to 20 mph when they drive around homes, school and shops to bring down casualty numbers on UK roads.<\/p>\n

As a result of the week, communities should become safer for those walking, cycling and running around the streets.<\/p>\n

Driver responsibility<\/p>\n

For the initiative to work, the greatest responsibility is being placed on drivers, who will be required to use their common sense and reduce their speeds when making their way through heavily populated areas.<\/p>\n

Those looking at purchasing a car through the latest Ford deals<\/a>, Mazda deals<\/a> and Citroen deals<\/a> may therefore want to keep the safety week in mind and make sure they do their bit to drive road accident numbers down.<\/p>\n

Success of Road Safety Week<\/p>\n

Road Safety Week is being coordinated by road safety charity Brake and is now in its 16th year.<\/p>\n

Headline sponsors Brain Injury Group and Specsavers have lent their backing to the scheme and the success of the programme could result in UK residential streets becoming much safer.<\/p>\n

Brake is hoping health professionals might sign up to the campaign in order to highlight the fact that road danger is preventing individuals from taking up healthier lifestyles because they have reservations about running or cycling on busy roads.<\/p>\n

Health professionals who get involved with the drive will be emailed a pack with posters they can download, as well as instructions on how they can spread the word and organise activities to mark the week.<\/p>\n

It is hoped that as a result, motorists will be more aware about how reducing their speed can help make Britain's roads safer.<\/p>\n

Road safety needs to be improved<\/p>\n

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, said the charity is appealing to professionals across the UK to get on board with the initiative.<\/p>\n

Ms Townsend stated: "As was recently acknowledged by the British Medical Association, improving road safety is critical if we are to encourage and enable more people to lead healthy lifestyles and opt for active, sustainable travel."<\/p>\n

She explained a target of this year's instalment of the campaign is to get the message of road safety across to motorists in particular.<\/p>\n

"Slower speeds in communities prevent devastating casualties and help make our communities healthier, greener, more pleasant places.<\/p>\n

"Health professionals are ideally placed to raise awareness about the difference we can all make to road safety and why this is so important."<\/p>\n

Those in search of more information about the Road Awareness Week from Brake – which aims to bring an end to the five deaths and 66 serious injuries that take place in the UK on a daily basis – can head to the event's official website.<\/p>\n

Ms Townsend said the drive represents a great opportunity for people to get involved in an awareness initiative that could have life-saving outcomes for many.<\/p>\n
