People in the UK continue to view their cars as an essential part of everyday living, even though the upkeep of vehicles can be very expensive.<\/p>\n

Running a motor can set drivers back significant sums, with petrol, repairs and MOTs all placing extra strain on stretched household budgets.<\/p>\n

But it seems the British public's love affair with owning their own car is showing no sign of ending, as new research from Halfords has indicated most people are still dependent on their auto for getting around.<\/p>\n

According to the Halfords Friend of the Motorist Study 2012 – which looked at the driving habits and attitudes of 2,000 road users in the UK – four in five people still view their car as an essential possession despite the rising cost of motoring.<\/p>\n

It was demonstrated that 84 per cent of car owners believe their vehicle to be vital to everyday life, with many pointing to a lack of public transport in some parts of the country and others citing no viable alternatives to car journeys as reasons for this.<\/p>\n

Indeed, just three per cent of those questioned did not view their runaround as a necessity.<\/p>\n

The findings suggest there will be plenty of people looking for the latest Ford deals<\/a>, Mazda deals<\/a> and Citroen deals<\/a> for some time to come as they aim to get behind the wheel of the best cars at the most competitive prices.<\/p>\n

Even though the cost of running a motor continues to escalate, it appears most people are unwilling to reduce the amount of time they spend between the wheel.<\/p>\n

It was shown that 63 per cent of owners go out in their cars every day, with 42 per cent of them hitting the road for two hours or more.<\/p>\n

A number of reasons were cited by survey respondents as to why their vehicles are so vital to their day-to-day living.<\/p>\n

While 44 per cent said they need a car for the commute to and from work, 24 per cent revealed they need their motor for essential trips – such as to the supermarket or local shops – and nine per cent use their autos to take their children to school, pick them up from friends' houses and ferry them to extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n

Paul McClenaghan, commercial director at Halfords, said: "It is clear that families cannot give up their car – it is an essential part of their everyday lives but the cost of motoring is having a painful impact on people's pockets … putting off maintenance really is a false economy."<\/p>\n

The study revealed 18 per cent of drivers are making lifestyle sacrifices in order to keep their vehicle up and running, with 20 per cent of these admitting to cutting back on nights out, 18 per cent cancelling visits to friends and family and 18 per cent deciding they will only head round to those living in close proximity.<\/p>\n

In addition, ten per cent said they have started taking part in car-sharing schemes in order to limit the amount of money they fork out on petrol for their daily work commute.<\/p>\n

To cut down on motoring costs, the study also showed many people are willing to take chances with safety.<\/p>\n

While eight per cent admitted to delaying essential maintenance to save money, 37 per cent claimed they would be willing to attempt simple upkeep tasks themselves.<\/p>\n

Mr McClenaghan added: "By choosing to ignore obvious faults or manufacturers' advice, drivers are only delaying the inevitable and likely to increase the eventual cost when something fails – as well as potentially putting both themselves and other road users at risk."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
