Navigating the roads can be particularly tricky in wintry conditions and there are many different factors drivers have to take into account when behind the wheel.<\/p>\n
People should plan ahead of their journey in order to make sure all eventualities are catered for – and one aspect of great importance is what they choose to wear on their feet.<\/p>\n
Road safety organisation and breakdown cover firm GEM Motoring Assist has called on motorists to keep a suitable pair of shoes in their car at all times when the temperature plummets and the roads become treacherous.<\/p>\n
The group has recommended drivers think more of safety and less of fashion when hitting the roads when snow and ice is on the surface, explaining picking the correct footwear is as important as keeping feet wrapped up nice and warm.<\/p>\n
Such an approach could mean individuals leave their sheepskin or fur-lined boots behind and instead opt for shoes that are both comfortable to drive in and wearable on slippery surfaces.<\/p>\n
Leaving these boots in the vehicle at all times during the winter months will mean motorists are never caught out when the bad weather hits and will allow them to focus on the other dangers posed by snow and heavy rain.<\/p>\n
David Williams, chief executive officer of GEM Motoring Assist, said: "We know that fashion dictates which winter boots are popular this season, however, many of them don't offer enough grip and could cause your foot to slip off or in between the peddles when driving."<\/p>\n
As a result, drivere are at heightened risk of being involved in minor collisions or mishaps. And when the weather is particularly bad, such an incident could have very serious consequences.<\/p>\n
Mr Williams advised: "Always keep a sturdy pair of shoes in your vehicle for driving, ideally ones that can be fastened securely or laced up and with a good grip on the sole. Correct footwear makes the driving task in hand a lot less hazardous."<\/p>\n
People planning on making journeys in perilous conditions should think long and hard about what type of footwear is suitable for driving, as there may be some boots that seem sensible but are in fact placing drivers in greater danger.<\/p>\n
For instance, while wellingtons might seem like a good idea, the restricted movement allowed by these boots makes it difficult to control foot movement on the pedals.<\/p>\n
There is less room for manoeuvre due to the thick shape of the products and the heavy duty rubber that makes them so sturdy.<\/p>\n
As a result, people are likely to find wellies are among the most impractical types of footwear for driving.<\/p>\n
Mr Williams stated: "Not only must you be comfortable while driving – you must also make sure your movement is never restricted or impaired."<\/p>\n
He explained shoes that are ideal for motorists are ones that allow them to maintain complete control of their driving – and of the vehicle – at all times, while those that do not enable them to move their feet freely should not be considered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
