With the school holidays just a month away, many families will be getting excited about jumping in the car and going on vacation.<\/p>\n
France has always been a popular destination for holidaymakers who want to drive and this summer is set to be no different, with around 17 million British nationals expected to holiday there, many by car. As such, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is dedicating its weekly driving tips to helping people who may be crossing the border in their cars in the next few months.<\/p>\n
The man the IAM calls Britain's top advanced driver Peter Rodger said the first thing to remember is that before leaving England, drivers need a breathalyser.<\/p>\n
In France all drivers and motorcyclists are required to carry a breathalyser kit with two disposable breathalysers, which meet the NF standards. Drivers may have heard that the fine for non-compliance has been cancelled indefinitely, but that doesn't mean they don't need to have one.<\/p>\n
Many people like to enjoy a drink while on holiday, but they need to be sensible as in France, the drink-drive limit is lower than in the UK – 50mg compared to 80mg per 100ml of blood – and on-the-spot fines in France are severe.<\/p>\n
If you exceed the speed limit by more than 40 km\/h, drivers will have their licences confiscated on the spot by the police.<\/p>\n
Obviously, driving on the right hand side of the road is one of the major differences. Mr Rodger said take it slow at first and take regular breaks.<\/p>\n
He concluded: "The school holidays are fast approaching, and many people will be driving on the continent this summer. Driving abroad can be very different to driving at home, but preparation as always is the key. Make sure your car is fit for the journey, plan your route in advance, including fuel stops, and remember to check up all the rules for driving in France before you go."<\/p>\n
