The new Nissan Micra is set to be an all-electric supermini with help from Renault, the company revealed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

A replacement for the Nissan Micra<\/a> has finally been teased and it seems that the long-serving supermini is getting the EV treatment. Nissan is getting some help from Renault<\/a> to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launching in 2025 according to the Japanese automaker, the new Nissan Micra is going to be closely related to the new Renault 5 and will even be built in the same plant in France. The electric Nissan Micra is said to be sold alongside the current Nissan Leaf<\/a> and Nissan Ariya<\/a> as the brand\u2019s entry-level EV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the news about the new electric Nissan is exciting for the industry, it isn\u2019t a huge shock given the company\u2019s previous announcements. Nissan has already stated it was working on a smaller EV that was designed to replace the current Nissan Micra, a sporty yet compact hatchback that\u2019s currently only sold in Europe and other select markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nissan has shown teaser images of the projected Micra electric, which is the world\u2019s first look at Nissan\u2019s next-generation small car. Aesthetically, it seems that Nissan is favouring a retrofuturist design, with its contrasting roof, cute circular lights and pronounced shoulders at the back borrowed from the Z and Juke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t the first that we have seen a retro-looking mini as they are booming in the industry at the moment. When the Micra launches by 2025, it will have to face off against the Honda e<\/a>, MINI Electric and the ORA Cat, a Chinese supermini set to come to the UK this year. Each of these motors has circular headlights and snazzy styling, and Nissan\u2019s teaser image suggests the Micra will follow those same styling cues alongside a flat-roofed hatchback design with more pronounced curves at the front and rear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this EV is still a fairly big car, it looks like a combination of modern design with the supermini Micras that were sold between 2002 and 2017. While competitors are still putting high prices on their new EVs, Nissan and Renault have stated that this time things will be different. The 5 and Micra will use a new electric platform called \u2018CMF-B EV\u2019, which is already being developed by Renault. It is said to use the Megane and Ariya\u2019s Google-based connected system, and shares suspension parts and seats with the Clio and current Micra, saving more cost. All of this roughly makes the new Renault 5 and Micra a third cheaper to build and 10% more efficient to drive than the Renault Zoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renault and Nissan have already sold a million electric cars between them, and are fully capable of getting battery costs down for both manufacturing and purchasing. The new CMF-B EV platform has been designed especially for electric vehicles, so it shares some parts with the bigger electric Renault Megane and Ariya and the next Nissan Leaf, but has a cheaper type of battery chemistry. The two companies share a common CMF-BEV platform, as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n

The goal for the two-car manufacturers is not just for their electric cars to be affordable and efficient, but to be desirable as well. While extra legislation and taxes are driving more people to EVs, it also helps that these new generations of electric cars are becoming more appealing to drive in. For example, the new electric Micra will have a range of 400km or 250 miles WLTP from a battery of \u201cjust over\u201d 50kWh, according to the companies, which should start appealing to drivers who are still sceptical of the mileage of EVs. The outgoing Nissan Micra is set to challenge the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa by offering good value, lots of equipment and sporty looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts are starting to notice that the new Micra might just be a Nissan Leaf in disguise, and in some ways this is true. Some obvious comparisons can be made with the Nissan Leaf, an entry-level EV and the only pure electric Nissan on sale. However, the industry already knows that the Leaf is on its way out. Nissan previously announced that it was developing an all-electric crossover to replace the current model in 2025. In a way, the Leaf has served its purpose and is succeeded by all future Nissan EVs rather than just a single car.
