GEM: Check holiday driving laws

Anyone planning a break this summer is being reminded to check they are aware of local driving laws before getting behind the wheel overseas.

GEM Motoring Assist is keen to ensure that motorists are conscious that overseas rules regarding speed limits, drink driving and roadside fines are often different – therefore, it is worth doing some research before setting off.

GEM road safety officer Neil Worth advised: "Familiarise yourself with motorway speed limits, and remember that foreign drivers are subject to the same traffic rules as residents, often enforceable by hefty on-the-spot fines."

He added while in the UK the standard drink-drive limit is 0.08 per cent, it is lower in many other countries, with Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia all having a zero ban on driving after consuming any alcohol.

A bit of research and sensible journey planning will help ensure you don’t feel the need to speed or to drive after drinking alcohol – so you’ll be staying legal and reducing risk on holiday,” said Mr Worth.
