New site launched to help older drivers stay safe

RoSPA has offered some guidance to help older drivers stay safe on the roads.

A new website has been launched to help older motorists ensure they stay safe on the roads.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) used funding from the Department for Transport to establish olderdrivers.org.uk, which provides advice and guidance to help older people update their driving skills and knowledge.

It also features information for people who may have concerns about the driving habits of friends or family members.

One of the specific aims of the website is to help older motorists recognise if their driving is changing, and if so how.

It has also been designed to help people find local driving assessment or refresher training and to improve understanding of the law regarding health conditions and driving.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, pointed out that older road users are often safer and more considerate than their younger counterparts, but there are also inevitable risks such as declining eyesight and slower reaction times.

"The aim of the website is to help older people to continue to drive for as long as they are safe to do so, and to provide advice on making the decision to retire from driving if they are no longer able to drive safely," he added.
