Nissan Leaf awarded 2011 European Car of the Year

Nissan's zero-emission, 100 per cent electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf has been awarded 2011 European Car of the Year.

The world's first mass-marketed, affordable, electric vehicle beat 40 contenders to become the first ever electric vehicle in the 47-year history of the awards to take the prestigious title.

A jury of 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries judged the awards and decided that the Nissan Leaf was the best European Car.

Hakan Matson, president of the jury, said: "The jury acknowledged today that the Nissan Leaf is a breakthrough for electric cars. Nissan Leaf is the first electric vehicle that can match conventional cars in many respects."

Motorists looking for eco-friendly Nissan deals will have to wait until March 2011 for the Leaf to hit UK shores as it is currently produced in Japan.

The Nissan Leaf is powered by a compact electric motor, producing an output of 109PS, which is enough for a maximum speed of 90mph.

This accolade is not the first accolade that the Nissan Leaf has achieved after it was named as the Green Car of the Year by TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.
