Nissan offers free taxi rides to Londoners

People in the capital were offered free rides in taxis courtesy of Nissan, as the firm attempts to demonstrate how cheap electric cars are compared to their fuel counterparts.

Last weekend there were scores of happy customers who were taken to a variety of locations across the capital, from Covent Garden to Croydon, in the 100 per cent electric Nissan LEAF.

Professional taxi drivers from the Battersea-based Climate Cars, a firm with a completely electric fleet, were behind the wheel, making sure there were no unhappy passengers.

The rides underlined the fact that using electric cars is six times cheaper than a standard petrol-powered car on a mile-for-mile basis.

Customers getting Nissan deals for the LEAF can expect to pay just 1.75p per mile for the electricity consumed.

To get their ride, passengers had to post a tweet with the hashtag #6XCHEAPER and pick up their ride at Truman Brewery near Liverpool Street Station.

"Every passenger got out of the Nissan LEAF taxi with a smile on their face. They loved the near silence and general refinement of the car… and were blown away when they discovered how cheap it is to fuel," said Jim Wright, managing director of Nissan Motor (GB) Limited.
