Vauxhall sets Astra-nomical records

For many people, one of the deciding factors when looking at new car deals is the sporting pedigree of the model.

And this is certainly going to make the Vauxhall Astra an attractive proposition in the coming months, as the car has just scorched its way into the record books.

Motorsport's governing bodies have confirmed two standard Ellesmere Port-built Astras set 18 new world and UK speed endurance records. The attempts saw the lead Astra 2.0 CDTi 165PS clock up a total of 3002.44 miles at an average of 125.101mph, during which time it only needed to stop for fuel and one change of tyres.

That should be a good enough set of statistics to take care of your morning commute!

The record-breaking attempts were carried out at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire and included the smashing of the long-standing UK 24-hour speed record, which was improved by 25mph.

Each of the two Astras needed to complete the two-mile banked circuit 1,500 times, so reliability was key and the cars did not let any of the drivers down.

Simon Hucknall, Vauxhall's PR manager, said: "This was an important test for the Astra and it proved that a car with the qualities that most motorists are after – exceptional reliability, a good performance/economy blend and long-distance comfort – can be found at their nearest Vauxhall showroom."

As well as the reliability and performance of the Vauxhall Astra, Mr Hucknall also paid tribute to the stamina and skill of the driving team, who he said "performed faultlessly through the attempt" to adhere to FIA rules.

The kind of Vauxhall Astra car buyers get their hands on may not be a souped-up racing car, but the reliability and engineering design certainly shine through. The new Astra drives every bit as dynamically as it looks, giving the person behind the wheel a thrilling experience whether they opt for the five-door hatchback or the Sports Tourer estate.
