Astra gets Vauxhall’s Whisper Diesel engine

Vauxhall Astra deals are about to get even more exciting and enticing.

The manufacturer has confirmed best-selling Astra is available with a 1.6 CDTi engine, which is Vauxhall's cleanest ever mid-size diesel and before now was only on offer in the Zafira Tourer and the Meriva.

Next month's Geneva Motor Show will be the official launch of the new engine and the expo will allow car buyers to get under the bonnet and see both of the 110PS and 136PS output options.

Vauxhall states the smaller engine has impressive statistics of 76.3mpg and CO2 emissions of just 97g/km, while the 136PS variant produces 72.4mpg on a combined cycle and has a CO2 emissions figure of 104g/km.

As the new engine is so quiet and refined, the 1.6 CDTi has been dubbed the Whisper Diesel. Engineers have managed to make it one of the best in its class when it comes to limiting the noise and vibration usually associated with diesel-powered motoring. A new efficient combustion process uses multiple injections, while redesigned components and improved use of acoustic covers also lower noise levels.

As well as being Euro 6-compliant and super quiet, the 1.6 CDTi also packs a punch, with its variable turbine turbocharger.

"We are delighted to introduce the 1.6-litre Whisper Diesel to the top-selling Astra range,” said Stuart Harris, head of carline brand at Vauxhall. "The new 1.6-litre engine is Vauxhall’s cleanest ever mid-size diesel and is now available on Astra, as well as Meriva and Zafira Tourer."

As well as the powerplant, the Astra will feature five and six-speed gearboxes. Vauxhall has invested over £40 million to ensure the transmission is optimised to the 1.6 CDTi and the car will feature a revised gear change, as well as an improved shift quality that is faster, slicker and less effort than before.

The 1.6 CDTi Astra is now available to order and the first deliveries are expected from April.
