The Renault 5 set to return?

The iconic Renault 5 is to be given a makeover and could return in a new supermini format.

Renault recently confirmed it has started work on a successor to the legendary car and it could offer buyers low emissions and a hi-tech interior. If launched, it may complement the car maker's existing Clio model.

First seen in 1972, the Renault 5 has a loyal following and they could be tempted by the updated "Value Up" vehicle.

It is expected it would cost around the same as the Clio to produce, but with a weight of around 830kg it is expected to be highly economical and initial figures suggest a 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine could expect to emit less than 100g/km of CO2.

Initial details suggest it could measure around 3.8 metres in length – making it larger than a Twingo, but more compact than a Clio. It could also offer full-width bench seats in the front and back.

However, Serge Mouangue, the head of product strategy at Renault's design think tank, has warned the concept car may never be made available.

"This is just a prototype now, a laboratory, and it won't be produced as it is," explained Mr Mouangue explained.

"But we will present the car internally to the public, and see what they say and how they react, then use these comments in a future vehicle."
