Volvo has confirmed plans to launch fully-electric S60-sized vehicles by 2020, as well as a number of other models.
Next year will see the arrival of the new Volvo XC90 that will combine a battery-powered electric motor and 2.0-litre petrol engine to offer 402 bhp.
However, Volvo believe the future of cars will be with alternative fuel and it is likely their first all-electric will be a saloon model so the S60 makes the ideal fit.
Hakan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, said: "We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream. We are confident that by 2020, ten per cent of Volvo’s global sales will be electrified cars."
He added the company expect to increase sales from 500,000 this year to 800,000 by 2020.
