Toyota commits to reducing emissions

Toyota has confirmed it wants to take significant attempts to reduce emissions by 2050.

In particular, the automaker has confirmed it will focus on producing hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles rather than all-electric models.

The company has seen an increase in sales of its fuel cell-powered cars and predicts its annual sales of models such as the Toyota Mirai will reach more than 30,000 within the next five years.

This means Toyota plans to cease production of petrol and diesel cars before 2050.

"You may think 35 years is a long time. But for an automaker to envision all combustion engines as gone is pretty extraordinary," explained senior managing officer Kiyotaka Ise.

However, Mr Ise did accept that some traditionally powered cars will probably remain, especially in developing countries, but other nations will be forced to embrace hybrid options due to global warming and other environmental issues.
