Ford's new 4×4 offering could become a major player in the popular sector, claims the automaker.
The Edge is set to be delivered before spring and it may be set to rival other SUV/crossover options such as the Audi Q5.
Starting at £29,995 for the base model, the Ford could offer a more affordable alternative to the BMX X3 and will go on sale Ford’s Kuga and Ecosport SUVs.
The base range model offers a 178bhp 2.0 TDCI diesel engine, a six-speed manual gearbox and the Zetec trim. As standard, the car has infotainment touchscreen with DAB radio, heated and cooled front seats, plus active noise cancellation, privacy glass and 19-inch alloy wheels.
For buyers wanting to spend a little more, then the Sport trim level costs from £34,495 and options include a six-speed automatic gearbox, as well as a twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel offering 208 bhp.
Andy Barratt, chairman and managing director, Ford of Britain, said: “Joining performance products such as the Mustang and Focus RS and new luxury products like Mondeo Vignale already in showrooms, the Edge makes the Ford product line-up for 2016 never stronger.
“It will deliver more room for passengers than large competitor SUVs that cost considerably more. The styling and suite of comfort, convenience and safety technologies in Edge rival the premium offerings available in the UK.”
