Service stations to get compulsory EV charge points

Electric vehicle points are set to be compulsory at motorway service stations under new legislation.

The Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill has already received its first reading in the House of Commons and would make the installation of EV points compulsory in a bid to encourage more autonomous vehicle use on UK roads.

According to the Department of Transport, the industry could be worth £50 billion to the UK economy by 2035 as demand eco-friendly vehicles continues to rise.

Transport minister John Hayes said: “We want the UK to be the best place in the world to do business and a leading hub for modern transport technology, which is why we are introducing the Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill and investing more than £1.2 billion in the industry.

“This bill will aid the construction of greater infrastructure to support the growing demand for automated and electric vehicles as we embrace this technology and move into the future.”

It is expected the charge points will be required to be smart, so they will be able to manage demand for electricity in line with the national grid supplies.
